Should I Use a Mouse for My Laptop?
Updated: Jul 23
Laptops today have become incredibly popular for their portability. Companies have managed to make these powerful devices with a sleek design, highly interactive trackpad and slim keys, for productivity on the go that is yet to be beaten. However, with government restrictions in place, many of us are travelling much less, and staying home much more. Your laptop is likely to be your main work-from-home device. With that in mind, should you consider making your laptop more functional with a mouse? Here is what you should consider before making a purchase.
The main question would be: what exactly do you use your laptop for? If it's mainly for the purpose of answering emails and light work, you are probably fine without a mouse. On the other hand, if you need to bring your entire workload onto your laptop, you may have several browser and web tabs open. If extra precision sounds like something you’re after, then a mouse might be a good choice for you.
1. Wired or Wireless?
A wired mouse is typically cheaper and comes with the added benefit of not needing charging, but having another wire attached to your minimalistic laptop design may not appeal to you. That brings us to wireless mice, which while they do need charging, actually have a battery life that can last years. All you need to connect your mouse is Bluetooth, or a dongle attached directly to your laptop.
Apart from this, there are also a huge array of products to choose from in both categories. Depending on the job scope, there is a mouse that will be most optimal for you. From video editing to video gaming, you should do your research to find the model best suited for your needs.
2. Does Price Matter?
In general, if you need a mouse for its basic functions, an affordable one will do the job just fine. An upgrade becomes worth considering if you need something more advanced or precise. For instance, if you’re a college student, we’ve all gotten used to our trackpads and probably won't need a mouse just yet, but as a business professional, a mouse might make your life just that much easier.
In the end, it’s also worth considering if you’ll continue to find use for your mouse outside of lockdown. If the answer is no, you can probably afford to tough it out for the time being. But, if a mouse seems to be the perfect solution for you, then we’d recommend buying yourself one ASAP!
