No brand versus branded IT products
Buying a generic USB or HDMI cable is worth the risk since they are drastically cheaper and even replacing them is not a problem.
Some IT hardware or devices purchase must be from a reliable brand, say a wireless router or even a laptop. You cannot afford to have such items from an unreliable source with no valid warranty attached to it. Furthermore, branded products are incentivized to be more reliable; consumers sending the items back during warranty periods is harmful to profit margins.
Let us go through some of the IT products we feel there is a good argument for either side or both as a purchase.
IT products in the grey zone
Headphones are a great example of a product where judgement should be well reserved, just because a headphone does not have a brand attached to it, does not necessarily mean its not any good. Every individual prefers a different type of sound, so if you test out a generic headphone that can produce a sound perfect for your ears, you should buy it. Most well-known brands produce low-end or entry-level models of their products which are hardly better than their much cheaper non-branded counterparts.
Power supply box inside a desktop computer is another grey-zone product. If you are a high-end user who wishes to make a desktop computer which is power-thirsty, there is no real reason to splash extra cash on a branded power supply. Power, as a circuit, is relatively necessary compared to other hardware you would find inside a computer, like a graphics processing unit for example. On the low end, with a very basic machine and for regular use, we recommend you buy the cheapest power supply your local electronic store is willing to supply with a money-back guarantee.
IT products you must buy branded
There are a lot of new generic brand laptops which are coming out in the market, and if you notice one thing at least, they tend to look the same. These companies are only a few years old and still do come with a warranty; however, we feel they are not to be trusted.
Some of these brands which we will not name openly, their laptops can be found on the Alibaba supplier website. Which leads us to suspect these laptops are ordered from generic suppliers in China and have a logo on them. While it might look good on paper with specs, these products not made nor designed by these brands and run the risk of failing in ways these new companies not intended financially to burden themselves with. What we mean is, since these laptops are purchased and customized by these suppliers and are sold to consumers with a small margin, recall of these products will cause this company to fold. Branded laptops manufactured by the same company or at least they control the manufacturing process. Plus a branded laptop company has many models and revenue capable of surviving a mass product recall; this product which they will fix and send back to the consumers with minimal loss in revenue or profit. Same cannot say of these new companies with their questionable business model. This new trend of generic laptops is worrying.
IT products you should buy non-branded or generic
IT accessories you definitely should buy non-branded. Mics, stands, selfie sticks, USB cables you should not waste extra on buying branded. Even something as necessary as a game controller for your desktop computer games, you are probably better off purchasing the cheapest controller you can find as long as it feels comfortable to you.
Laptop stands and small capacity USB thumb drives you should also spend as little money on as possible. It makes no sense going for a brand for these purchases; we do not see any real justification for you to spend two or more times the amount of money. Large name brands do not need our support to survive; these small companies making these generic products need our assistance more. No-brand companies produce not only things we usually use, but many niche products which no large brands will ever bother creating. Aftermarket products like apple watch straps or tablet sleeves are also significant non-brand purchases, only if you like the look of it. Overall we think it best if you use your discretion to determine what is right for you and in your interest to purchase. If you like to collect gadgets, non-branded ones will save you a lot of money.
