Desktop computers have seen better days, and the rise of much more mobile and convenient options have made us realise we don't need one. But if you have ever considered connecting a desktop computer to your TV, you are not alone. From personal experience, once you combine the power of a desktop computer and the quality of a 4K TV, the possibilities are endless. TV operating systems these days are improving, but they may not necessarily have our best interests at heart and are hardly customizable. A desktop computer can stream Netflix, churn out music from Spotify, possibly stream anything on a web browser. You can also use it to play Blu-ray discs, stored home videos, galleries of family pictures, work out of it even. A TV has a fixed GPU (graphic processing unit) and a sound card. In a desktop, you could add the best sound card on the market and a high-end GPU which smoothens a 4K playout like no other. Pair that with a wireless keyboard with a trackpad, it is a combination orgasmically lethal, both for movie fans and audiophiles alike.

Desktop computers do not have to be a gigantic eyesore; there are compact options; Mini-ITX is the best example. These casings come in sizes as compact as a gaming console and can be stowed away easily from sight. The compactness does come at a price; cooling can become an issue if you don't plan it properly. Read online reviews to see if the model which has caught your eye does not come with any unforeseen cooling issues. Especially if you live in a warm-weather climate country, overheating can impact the performance of your computer substantially.

Mini-ITX mainboards are a little pricier than the standard ATX mainboards and for a good reason. Many design hours went into creating something which does not compromise on components operating so closely together. Heat is not the only problem here; magnetical interference can also impede the efficiency and reliability of a component. If you are not too sure about which model to get, the Gigabyte and ASUS are the more reliable brands in the market. The more heatsinks on a mainboard, the better it is at dissipating heat.

Make sure to get soundcards with digital audio in, this would allow you to connect your TV's output to your computer soundcard, have it processed even further and deliver a better output to your expensive sound system. You do not want a situation where only your PC can output to your sound system. Alternatively, the sound card option is purely optional.
