3 affordable and easy to set up home security systems

It is hard to see security as a lousy investment. Even a fake camera planted outside the house in plain sight is an effective form of deterrence. Private security companies are a great option if money is no object; they have human resources monitoring your cameras and can call police on your behalf. Still, it is a very archaic solution for such a modern world. Private security companies have upgraded and updated themselves, not the price though, and if you are looking for a simple camera solution for monitoring and insurance purposes; there are much better options out there. In this review article, we highlight some of the solutions we feel are just as effective at a private security service, without the hefty price tag. Let's explore some of these options together.

1. Wyze Cam Pan

Affordable and easy to set up home security cameras

The Wyze Cam Pan is very cheap; it should be illegal. Mechanical pan, HD video recording, web monitoring, mobile monitoring, free cloud storage and much more; and all for a staggering price of US$29. How is that even possible? Wyze's future business plan aside, you do have to purchase the microSD card separately with a maximum limit of 32GB, which means local storage of 2-3 days worth of continuous HD video. The cloud storage which comes free can store an unlimited amount of recordings of up to fourteen days. Which means you can have many of these cameras in your home and not charged extra, but the limit of fourteen-day would still hold. Just make a police report and save the video as fast as possible; there should not be too much of an issue with this limitation. The reviews of this camera have been nothing short of amazing, but we would wish to highlight some of the design flaws. There is no local storage solution other than the camera itself if you have purchased a separate SD card, so imagine if a burglar were to burst in and immediately remove the camera, and provided your camera has no backlog in its upload, there is a slight possibility that recording would not be found in the cloud either. The other disadvantage is the dependency on power and if ripped out of its place, will no longer upload what it has captured. The Wyze Cam Pan can only operate indoors, although we do see many aftermarket brackets which allow outdoor installation. Overall, at such a low price, you can place many of these around your house; covering every possible angle.

2. Arlo Pro 3

Affordable and easy to set up home security cameras

Netgear has done an expensive job with the Arlo home security system. And their latest rendition is the Arlo Pro 3, with its 2K recording security system and even records night-time in colour. Not the cheapest option of the list, but there is a good reason for that. You are paying for nothing short of quality. In the world of home security system, it is the best and easiest to set up. Straightforward setup instructions have this system up and running in no time. Cameras that can withstand heavy snow, direct sunlight and rain without breaking a sweat. Same as Wyze Cam Pan, Arlo Pro records when it senses motion, but it does not have any mechanical pan ability. What it does have is a time rewind function, this means it records and uploads video logs with ten seconds before the motion detected. Nothing short of incredible programming. Many critics are against the hub, which stores and manages the cameras in your environment. The Arlo cameras do not connect directly to the internet; it sends whatever it records to the hub first. Which we feel is often overlooked how useful that can be should intruder stead your cameras. The hub can be hidden from plain sight and secretly upload the recording to the cloud server. Furthermore, you can attach a storage device to your hub and have the recording stored there as well, perfect we think to pair it with a WD MyBook. If you had the Arlo Pro 2 and models before that, you get to enjoy the unlimited 7-day cloud recording, however with the new camera, that is no longer available. You can enjoy three months of 30-day 2K recording during the trial period, but anything after that has a monthly charge. As we said, it is not the cheapest option, but you won't be disappointed by its functionality and reliability.

3. Logi Circle 2

Last on our list is Logitech's Circle 2. It can only be compared to the Arlo series of cameras as they seem to have many parallels between them. Just like the Arlo, Circle 2 is also weather-resistant and has a cloud-based recording. However, no hub or central management system is operating between the cameras; the wired and wireless versions are separate models entirely as well. Minus the versatility a hub would give it, the Circle 2 is also a pure cloud recording solution. The Wyze may be able to pan a wide-angle, but the Circle 2 has the widest angle lens of them all at 180 degrees.

If you look at the plans available for the cloud recording, what we realize is how cheap it becomes when pairing yearly, not to mention reasonable. So even five Circle 2 camera paired with a yearly home plan makes the Circle 2 not the most expensive option on our list. Best of all, it is the easiest to set up of all the options here, and if their promise of bank-level encryption is valid, they are easily the safest option backed by a Swiss parent company. You do not want personal recordings ending up on the internet for everyone to see.

This list might seem a bit short, but too many options spoil the rank. Whatever that means.
